Indirect reciprocity is an important feature of Human cooperation and it has
been argued that a form of reputation tracking could be important for the
evolution of IR. Nowak and Sigmund (1999) present a basic model of the
evolution of indirect reciprocity through image-scoring strategies, and
suggest that language may play an important role. Here, I present a model
that incorporates a simple signaling game into the image-scoring model of
Nowak and Sigmund. In this simple setting, I find that without a way to
police the signals, the co-evolution of indirect reciprocity and signaling
is implausible.
